Common fault

Why is my wine cooler not holding temperature?

Short answer

Put a thermometer between the bottles before you trust the panel.

What is actually going on

Wine columns fail quietly, and the usual version is a display still showing 55°F over racks sitting several degrees warmer, because the sensor sits where the circulating air still reaches and the bottles do not. When one zone of a dual-zone cabinet holds while the other climbs, the healthy zone has proved the sealed system out, and the fault belongs to the drifting zone: its evaporator, its fan or its damper.

What we check, and in what order

Ambient temperature is the first thing we measure here, and it explains more calls than any component does. A cabinet built into an island in a remodeled cottage kitchen, into a bar wall near Sail Bay, or into an outdoor kitchen is rejecting heat into a space where the air barely moves. On a warm afternoon that unit runs without ever cycling off and still loses two or three degrees. Nothing in it is broken. It has been asked to do something it cannot.

Condensation inside the glass is a separate fault from temperature and gets diagnosed separately. It is the door seal, or the pane heater whose job is to hold the glass above dew point. Both matter more in a coastal kitchen than anywhere inland, because the room spends much of the year close enough to dew point that a small loss shows up as fog on the glass by morning.

If that matches what yours is doing, say so when you call — it decides which parts come on the van.

Baking in our little cottage kitchen had gone off, everything coming out pale and underdone. He put a thermometer on the center rack, ran the Wolf a while, and it was about thirty degrees under. A sensor and a calibration, not the new range I had already started shopping for.

We rent the place out over the summer so I only get down every few weeks. The beverage center in the bar had quit and the drawers in the island were running warm too. He looked at all of them the same visit, and he took the alley instead of trying to park on Mission.

Saturday, house full of people, and the Viking went warm on the fridge side. Someone came out that same day. He stuck a probe down by the coil instead of trusting the display, said the sensor was feeding the control the wrong number, and had it cold again before dinner.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

  1. Do you service the drawers, beverage centers and outdoor ice makers as well?

All of them. Tell us what is in the house and we look at every unit on the same visit. A place near Sail Bay or Crown Point often has one full-height built-in plus refrigerator drawers in the island, a beverage center in the bar and a UC-series ice maker outside: the tightest cabinetry, the least airflow, and condensers nobody has ever touched.

  2. What does the diagnostic fee cover, and how is the repair priced?

The diagnostic fee covers the technician's time and travel, and it is waived when you go ahead with the repair. The repair is quoted separately once the fault is known, as one figure covering parts and labor, agreed by you before any component is fitted. Payment comes at the end, after the appliance is run and tested: major credit or debit card, or personal check.
