What is the loud humming or rattling from my refrigerator?
Short answer
A new noise usually starts behind the lower grille rather than inside the food compartment. A condenser fan rattles when debris has reached the blade or when its bearing is wearing, and compressor mounts stiffen with age and hum through the cabinetry.
What is actually going on
In Pacific Beach that fan is also the part sitting in salt air pulling in sand, so a rattle here is worth looking at sooner than it would be a few miles inland.
What we check, and in what order
The sequence is the argument for calling early. A condenser fan that is noisy is still moving air and the unit still cools. A condenser fan that has seized moves nothing, head pressure climbs, and within a day or two you have a warm refrigerator and a repair that is no longer a fan. Dealing with the noise is the cheap version of the same job.
Where the sound comes from tells us most of it. A rattle or buzz at the grille is the condenser fan or something loose against it. A hum you can feel through the counter is the compressor mounts. A whir or chirp from inside the compartment that changes when you open the door is an evaporator fan, and that one usually arrives with a temperature complaint attached. A hiss or gurgle after the compressor stops is refrigerant settling and is normal.
